In the Spotlight: Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley

For our “In the Spotlight” series, we’re shining a light on community resources, sharing how to best find support and give support to our friends and neighbors. This month’s highlight: Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley.

Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley provides opportunities to build a legacy of affordable home ownership for families of low-income within Washtenaw County. We chatted with Alison Oumedian, Director of Individual Giving & Annual Fund, who filled us in about what programs are offered, how to access these services, and ways to help support Habitat for Humanity.

What should we know about Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley and who do you serve?

Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley works to build homes, secure futures, and strengthen communities through a legacy of affordable homeownership in Washtenaw County. We have done this for more than 35 years by providing services through our Home Ownership Program, Home Improvement Program, Community Development work, and ReStore to low to mid-income residents in Washtenaw County.

What services or programs might people not know you provide?

Many people may not realize that they qualify for a Habitat home. As it becomes more difficult to purchase a home in today's market, Habitat's work can be the key to help many struggling to become a homeowner. These homes are not given away but are purchased with an affordable mortgage to qualifying applicants.

Our Home Improvement Program work provides more than 200 critical home repair projects to Washtenaw County residents every year, keeping homeowners safely and securely housed. Our Community Development work focuses on what the community wants to see changed or improved and then partners with residents, local organizations, and sponsors to achieve these goals. This past year, Habitat participated in activities and events, including neighborhood association meetings, community celebrations, and community beautification projects. Habitat is making a real impact throughout our entire community through this legacy of affordable homeownership. All of this work combined builds a stronger community for all of us.

How can community members who want to provide support get involved?

Volunteer & Support: Habitat relies on volunteers to complete our mission. Team Habitat days, Women Build, Faith Builds, and Exterior Home Improvement days are all available to volunteer and donate to so that we can provide this critical work. Our ReStore can always use volunteers to help on the sales floor or with donations! Volunteer: www.h4h.org/volunteer

Donations: As we continue to face challenges ahead, Habitat has no plans to decrease our impact, but we need continued support to keep these critical programs serving those in need. Donations can be made via credit card online at www.h4h.org  and clicking “Donate” on the right side, or by calling (734) 882-2009.

Are there any special events coming up folks can participate in?

Our Annual Golf Outing: Habitat FORE Humanity Golf Classic will be on Friday, September 12th at Stonebridge Golf Club. Paul Saginaw, Zingerman's Co-founder and community leader will be our guest speaker and dinner only tickets can be purchased as well. Visit www.h4h.org/golfouting to sign up to golf, buy your dinner ticket, or sponsor.

What else would you like us to know about Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley?

The benefits of homeownership extend far beyond one homeowner. Generations are impacted and communities transformed through the life-changing benefits of homeownership and can serve as a family’s greatest asset. Habitat’s focus on improving affordable homeownership leads to numerous outcomes beyond the house, such as greater economic stability, access to quality education, increased civic and social engagement, better health, and a reduced environmental footprint.

Habitat anticipates an increase in expenses to perform our programs, as well as higher property costs, while addressing decreased funding sources. We are proud of the strong, enduring organization we have grown into over the 35 years of our work in Washtenaw County. Through community support, we will face these challenges and continue this work that builds a sustainable future.

We’re giving a special thank you to Alison for sharing how Habitat for Humanity is helping strengthen the Washtenaw County community!
